Schools Outreach Field Trip Program
Sponsored by Friends of Edgewood Natural Preserve
MISSION: To inspire in children attitudes of appreciation and
caring for the natural environment.
PROGRAM: Our current program offers free docent-led discovery walks
at Edgewood County Park and Preserve for elementary school groups. The
learning approach is a hands-on interactive experience with nature.
THEMES: Through the field trip experience, we aim to develop these
themes:
 |
All living things require a suitable habitat that
provides their basic
needs of food, water, shelter, and space.
|
 |
Edgewood Preserve encompasses several diverse
communities,
such as oak woodland, mixed evergreen forest, chaparral,
and serpentine grassland.
|
 |
Different types of plants and animals have special
adaptations
that enable them to survive in their particular community.
|
 |
The unique serpentine soils of Edgewood create
special habitats
that harbor a number of endangered species.
|
 |
Living things are interdependent and all affect one
another in their environment.
|
 |
The biotic community of Edgewood is unique and
important
by itself and also as it relates to the entire mid-Peninsula
ecosystem.
|
 |
People can choose to act responsibly and protect the
natural
environment, to which we are all connected. Stewardship is vital to
Edgewood's preservation, and each person's actions make
a difference.
|
FUTURE GOAL: Friends of Edgewood plans to develop
a pre/post field trip activity packet to complement the fourth grade
California Science Content Standards and prepare students for a meaningful
field trip experience at Edgewood. To achieve this goal we seek to consult
teachers about the elements they would like to see incorporated into the
packet. If you would like to schedule a field trip or collaborate in
designing the activity packet, please contact us
